In all honesty your entire house should be your man cave. But in cases where that’s not possible (*cough... marriage... *cough), any guy can set up a dude den if you have a room available to turn into your own private domain. If you have a basement in need of finishing, a garage, den, or a spare room in need of some masculine refurbishing, you have room for a man cave.
And it should be all about you, from the furniture to entertainment center, to the stuff on the walls. So there are some very important things that should be standard in every guy’s personal space. These fall into three main categories:
1. The Right Furniture
Yeah, theme parties suck, but a theme for your man cave is a must. That way you don’t have a mish mash of stuff thrown together, looking more like a storage room with a TV on the wall than a place to invite the guys over. The theme should revolve around what interests you the most. Big movie fan and plan to mostly watch movies in your man cave? You're going to want to have awesome theater seating with cup holders and a popcorn machine.
If you’re into hunting tables bases and lamps made out of antlers work, along with some (repeat: some) camo. Sports fans you’re gonna want big, comfy couches, maybe a couple of stadium seats, and don’t forget the tap.
2. Manly Decor
Once the furniture is in place, it’s time to start bringing out the personality with wise decor choices. Going with the movie fan theme, framed vintage movie posters or posters from your favorite films, are a must. Hit the local mega-plex... a lot of times they are throwing out old lobby promo materials, and you can pick up a few free.
Outdoorsmen, you’re going to want to decorate your walls with some great taxidermy pieces, whether they were from your own hunts or just great finds. Sports fans are the easiest... chances are good you needed a spot to show off all the memorabilia you’ve collected over the years.
And you can create some custom stuff yourself. Pinterest is a great place to find many solid DIY ideas, from creating soap dispensers out of your old whiskey bottles to using tools as utility wall decor.
3. Entertainment Is the Key
The entertainment system in your man cave may be the most important part of your set up. From what you'll watch the games on, to music for parties, there are a ton of things to consider.
Start out by buying a quality big screen TV and mounting kit. Making sure the mount pivots and swivels is important too. Once that is all plugged in and ready to go, you need to make sure to bundle satellite TV and Internet services so that you don't miss a game or a movie. The Internet allows you even more access to entertainment by opening up access to Netflix and more.
You’re going to want to invest in some non-television entertainment as well, like a pool table or dart board. And, no man cave is complete without a fridge for the beer and snacks, and a kegerator in the bar. You did remember to save space for a bar, right?
Bottom line: Don't skimp on your man cave. You deserve the best place to enjoy yourself and relax that you can come up with. And the more DIY work you do for it, the more personal your space will be.
